Compote, Comport - Definition

A compote is a container used as a serving dish, sometimes it has a lid. 19^th Century American firms often referred to a compote as a bowl joined to a base. It can be used with a high footed or low-footed section. High footed compotes were often used for serving fruit. The lower-footed compote was often used to serve sauces or as jelly dishes. Compotes also make very nice candy dishes. Some companies called their compotes a comport. They are the same type of dish.
